Guiding Philosophy/Purpose
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the structure and practices of the political system of the United States.

Topics Covered:
The foundations of the political systems in the United States, factors that influence political behavior of individuals and groups, U.S. political parties and interest groups, the branches of government at federal, state, and local levels, civil liberties and rights, the political process, U.S. government compared to that of other countries, how citizens can influence government policy.

1. To foster among students civic dispositions and commitment to fundamental values and principles required for competent and responsible citizenship.
2. To develop among students the participatory skills required to monitor and influence formulation, implementation, evaluation, and enforcement of public policy, as well as to participate in voluntary efforts to solve neighborhood and community problems.
3. To provide students with the knowledge and intellectual skills required to participate in the civic activities described above.
