Who can take this course: anyone who completes World History 

Length of course: One Semester 

Guiding Philosophy/Purpose
Students will achieve an understanding of their basic rights afforded to them by the US Constitution.

Topics Covered
A sample of topics covered include:
1. Freedom of speech; what are you allowed to say and how are you allowed to act?
2. The right to bear arms; how has the Supreme Court ruled on the question of gun ownership?
3. The right to be secure; when can the police or school administrators invade your personal privacy?
4. The right against forced incrimination; when can you "plead the fifth"?
5. The right against cruel and unusual punishment; what is torture?
6. Due Process and equal protection; affirmative action and marriage equality

It will improve students analytical skills as they learn about interesting cases that directly affect their lives.
